Kos

Kos is one of islands in the Dodecanese and probably only rivalled by Rhodos when it comes down to popularity. The capital of Kos, which also bears the name Kos, is on the eastern side of the island. Although its a fairly modern city (not in the least because of the annual invasion of travellers), it has some quite well-preserved sights, such as the Knights of St John Castle dominating the harbour and ruins of ancient Roman buildings.
When you want to see less tourists and more scenery and secluded beaches, head for the inland. Several buses leave from the main busstation in Kos. The famous Asklepieion (the former centre of Hippocratic teaching) is only some 45 minutes away and hsave a good opportunity to explore the surrounding villages such as Tigaki and Mastihari.
